Do you ever feel like you’re stuck in the same place spiritually? You’ve been trying to grow, yet no matter what you do, it seems like real progress slips out of reach. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
Most people experience seasons of spiritual stagnation. But the surprising truth is that breaking free may not be as difficult as it seems.
What Does It Mean to Be Spiritually Stuck?
Spiritual stagnation is like being on a treadmill, you’re moving, but not getting anywhere. You attend church, read your Bible, and pray, but your spiritual life feels flat. It’s frustrating, and over time, it can lead to discouragement.
This state often comes from focusing on the outward aspects of faith, without addressing the heart. Spiritual growth requires going deeper than just checking off a list of religious activities.
The Real Reason Most People Stay Stuck
The main reason people remain stuck is that they rely too much on their own effort. We’re trained to think that if we work harder, we’ll get better results. But spiritual growth doesn’t work that way.
In 1 Corinthians 3:1-3, Paul addresses believers who were stuck in spiritual infancy. They were trying to live their faith through human effort, but it wasn’t working. They were still acting out of jealousy and division, showing their immaturity. Paul explained that true growth comes through the Spirit, not the flesh.
Pointing to Jesus
This passage points to Jesus in the sense that spiritual maturity is found through deeper relationship with Him. Jesus embodies the wisdom and power of God (1 Corinthians 1:24), and only by growing in the knowledge of Christ can believers move beyond the flesh and become spiritually mature. Jesus is the model for our growth, as He demonstrated a life led by the Spirit in complete submission to the Father. Our maturity comes as we become more Christ like in our thoughts, actions, and character.
How to Break Free and Grow Spiritually
If you feel stuck, the key is to shift your focus from effort to surrender. Here are two practical steps to help you break free:
- Feed on God’s Word
Just like our bodies need nourishment, so does our spirit. But rather than just skimming through the Bible, try to meditate on it. Take one passage and let it sink in. Ask God to reveal what He wants to teach you. - Walk by the Spirit, Not the Flesh
Spiritual maturity happens when we stop trying to fix ourselves and allow the Holy Spirit to work in us. Galatians 5:16 says, “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” Start your day by inviting the Holy Spirit to lead you.
The Bottom Line
Being spiritually stuck is common, but it doesn’t have to be permanent. Shift your focus from striving to surrender, and allow God to do the work in your life. Real, lasting growth comes from His Spirit, not from our efforts. Now, what’s holding you back from making that shift today?
